Mulled Cider

I feel like this year I’m sooooo behind on my Christmas shopping. This year, for some reason, I had absolutely no idea what to give to anyone! Ideas just sparked in the very last minute. Thank goodness for Amazon Prime!

Also, I’m not sure why, probably the weather, but this month I’ve been sick. A lot! One week it was below freezing, the next week it would be warm. All I’ve been wanting to do is soak in a hot salt bath and drown myself in warm beverages.

You all know how much I love the complexity of spiced drinks. There was this one year where Kyle and I were OBSESSED with apple cider. So much that we were legitly sad when the season was over.

So, since the days are cold now (most of the times), it’s time to heat up that cider. Add some toasted spices and enjoy the warm embrace to your soul. Toasting the spices will release their oils, and not only will it make your drink more fragrant, but it’ll also fill your entire house with some holiday scents. If these spices don’t get you all Christmasy, then I don’t know what will!

You can bring this to a family Christmas gathering or a Friendmas, and you can add a little something something if you’re feeling a tad naughty. ;)

INGREDIENTS

2 cups apple cider
1 medium orange, sliced
6 1-inch cinnamon sticks
1/4 teaspoon coriander
3 cloves
2 cardamom pods
1/4 star anise

METHOD

  1. Toast all the spices until fragrant.
  2. Put the apple cider, orange slices, and toasted spices in a large pot. Cover and bring to a boil.
  3. Reduce heat and let the cider simmer for 20 minutes.
  4. Serve hot cider in a cup with cinnamon stick.
